STUDENT DISCOUNT GUIDE

Student car insurance discounts.

Starting school, heading to college or reviewing a family policy? Keith Roberts’s agency can help you ask about GEICO student discount eligibility and prepare the right information.

Start with the good-student question

GEICO describes a good-student discount for eligible full-time students maintaining a B average or better. Availability and requirements vary by state and GEICO company. Ask which rules apply to your situation in Texas, New Mexico or Oklahoma; qualifying grades alone do not confirm a discount.

What to have ready for the conversation

  1. Enrollment and grades. Know the school, enrollment status and most recent grading period. Ask whether a report card, transcript or other record is accepted, and how to submit it securely.
  2. Home and school arrangements. Explain where the student lives during the term and breaks, whether a vehicle goes to school and who regularly drives it.
  3. Driver and vehicle details. Have the student’s licensing status and the vehicles being considered available. For broader preparation, use our teen and new driver guide.
  4. Current coverage or a new quote. Identify the policy you want reviewed, or the coverage you are shopping for. Ask what information is still needed before a discount can be confirmed.

When a student lives away at school

GEICO lists a separate student-away-at-school opportunity for eligible full-time students living away from the household without regular access to a covered vehicle. Ask whether your arrangement qualifies, including visits home and summer plans.

If the student takes a car to campus, explain where it will be kept and used. Do not assume the same discount applies, or remove a driver just because they leave for school. Ask the agency to review the policy and any needed updates.

School grades and driving courses are different

GEICO lists driver training and defensive driving separately from its good-student discount. Defensive driving focuses on safe-driving and accident-prevention techniques. Before paying for a course, confirm the exact provider, course and eligibility rules with the agency. A course accepted for a licensing requirement is not automatically an approved insurance discount course. See our defensive driving guide.

Common questions

What if grades or enrollment change?

Ask when eligibility is reviewed and whether updated records are needed. Mention a change in enrollment, graduation or school arrangements so the policy review uses current information.

Should I compare only the discount?

Compare the total premium with equivalent limits, deductibles and policy periods. A discount may apply to particular coverages; it does not guarantee a specific savings amount or a lower overall price.

How do I review an existing policy?

Call our agency and ask for a student discount review. Starting a new quote is not required for that conversation. A request alone does not change coverage or confirm a discount.
