DEFENSIVE DRIVING DISCOUNTS

Defensive driving discounts: check before you enroll.

Thinking about a driving course? An approved course may qualify an eligible driver for a GEICO discount. Our agency serves Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma and can help you review the questions to ask before choosing a class.

Check the guidance for your state

GEICO’s published criteria differ by state and company. These are screening points, not confirmation that a particular policy qualifies.

Texas

GEICO lists age 50 or older, voluntary course completion and no current Driver Training Discount. It notes that the age limit may not apply to every GEICO company.

New Mexico

GEICO lists age 50 or older and voluntary course completion. Ask which approved course and requirements apply to your policy.

Oklahoma

GEICO lists voluntary completion and at least six hours of classroom or field driving instruction. Its current guidance says an online course is not available. Confirm an eligible option before enrolling.

Five questions to ask before booking

  1. Which driver would qualify? Have the driver’s name and age ready for your policy review. Explain whether you are checking an existing policy or preparing for a new quote.
  2. Is this exact course accepted? Share the provider, course title, delivery format and planned completion date. Keep the course description so the agency can help you identify what needs confirmation.
  3. Does another discount affect eligibility? Ask us to review the discounts already shown on your policy, especially if a household member recently completed driver training.
  4. What documentation will be needed? Ask how to supply completion details through the insurer’s approved process. Save the certificate and any confirmation you receive.
  5. What would change on my policy? Ask about the eligible coverages, expected premium effect, start date and how long the discount would remain available. Request clarification on anything still pending.

After completing a course

Keep a simple record of the course provider, completion date and the driver who attended. Follow the instructions confirmed for your policy instead of assuming that completing a class finishes every step.

When the policy review is complete, check the updated documents. Ask the agency to explain what changed and whether anything else is needed. If you are also comparing a new quote, keep limits, deductibles and drivers consistent so the comparison is useful.

Common questions

Does a court-ordered course qualify?

GEICO’s guidance for these three states calls for voluntary completion, rather than a course ordered by a court or government entity. Tell the agency why you are taking the course before enrolling.

Should I choose the lowest-priced course?

Confirm acceptance first. Then compare the schedule, format and total course cost with the expected effect on your own policy. A low price alone does not answer whether the course fits your insurance needs.

Will my total bill necessarily go down?

Do not treat a course as a promised reduction. Review your final quote or policy documents and ask which factors changed. Our broader auto insurance discounts guide helps you prepare for that conversation.
