TEENS & NEW DRIVERS
Auto insurance for teens & new drivers.
Getting a permit, earning a license or buying a first car changes the insurance conversation. Our agency can help you prepare and start a GEICO auto insurance quote.
Talk with the agency before driving plans change
Contact your insurance provider when a household member gets a permit or license. Requirements can differ by state and insurer, and the right time to update a policy should be confirmed directly. Do not assume a newly licensed driver is automatically accounted for.
Our team helps families in Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma consider the household’s vehicles and drivers together. Explain who will drive each car, where it will be kept and whether the student will live at home or attend school elsewhere.
Three decisions to discuss as a family
Which vehicle?
Before buying a first car, compare insurance options for the actual vehicles you are considering. Purchase price alone does not tell you the insurance cost. Vehicle details, drivers, location and coverage choices all matter.
Which coverage?
Review liability limits and the cost of repairing or replacing the car. Collision and comprehensive address different types of vehicle damage. Discuss uninsured motorist and medical-related coverage choices where available instead of treating “full coverage” as one standard package.
Which deductible?
A deductible is an amount you may need to pay after a covered loss. Compare the premium and deductible together. Choose an amount your household could realistically manage, and check financing requirements before changing coverage.
Prepare for the quote conversation
- Driver status: whether the new driver has a permit or license and when that status changed.
- Vehicle details: year, make and model, ownership and the vehicle the student expects to drive.
- Everyday use: driving to school or work, estimated mileage and the address where the vehicle is normally kept.
- School details: student status, whether the student lives away from home and whether a vehicle goes with them.
- Current coverage: the limits and deductibles you want to compare, plus your desired effective date.
Keep documents available for the insurer’s secure application process. Please do not put driver’s license numbers, dates of birth or other sensitive information in a general contact message.
Ask about potential discounts
Eligible students may qualify for good-student or driver-training discounts. Multi-vehicle or multi-policy opportunities may also be relevant to the household. Requirements and availability vary by state, company and situation; ask our team what applies before paying for a course or expecting a particular reduction.

Common questions
Should my teen have a separate policy?
That depends on ownership, residence, driver eligibility and the insurer’s rules. Review your household’s circumstances with the agency rather than assuming a separate policy is always required or always less expensive.
What if my student leaves for college?
Let your insurer know where the student and vehicle will be located and whether the student will have regular access to a car. Ask how that affects the policy and any student-related discounts.
Does starting a quote add a driver?
No. A quote is a shopping step. An existing-policy change must be processed and confirmed by the insurer. For help adding a driver to a current policy, contact our agency.
