PLAN YOUR NEXT POLICY
Switch car insurance.
Keep the details in order.
A useful comparison starts with coverage. A smooth switch ends with confirmed dates and documents. Use this checklist to work through both.

FIRST, SET A BASELINE
Make the quotes comparable.
Have your current declarations page handy. It summarizes the policy period, listed vehicles and coverages, making it easier to spot meaningful differences.
Same information
Use accurate driver and vehicle details, where the car is kept, and how it is used. Tell the insurer about changes instead of carrying old assumptions into a new quote.
Same coverage choices
Compare liability limits and deductibles side by side. Check collision, comprehensive and optional benefits, such as rental reimbursement, rather than assuming they are included.
Same time period
Compare the full premium for an equivalent policy term. Then check the down payment, installment fees and payment schedule so a smaller monthly payment does not hide a different total.

PUT THE DATES IN ORDER
Four steps to a considered switch.
You can generally shop before renewal. Your current insurer can explain any cancellation requirements or fees that affect the timing.
Keep your current policy until you have the new policy or written confirmation of coverage. Verify the effective date and time to avoid a gap.
Review what you have.
Note your renewal date, current coverage and any lender or lease requirements. Decide what you want to keep and what needs another look.
Check the proposed policy.
Ask about every difference from your current coverage. Review the final price and terms before choosing a policy; an initial estimate is not a coverage confirmation.
Confirm the new start.
Complete the insurer’s purchase requirements. Obtain proof of coverage and check that the vehicles, drivers and selected coverages are correct.
Close out the old policy.
Follow the old insurer’s cancellation process and request confirmation of the end date. Ask about any unused-premium refund or fees. If a lender or lessor needs updated proof, arrange delivery.

A QUICK FINAL CHECK
Keep these answers together.
Use one note or folder for the switch. These questions make a useful starting point for a call with either insurer.
- What exact date and time does the new coverage begin?
- Which document confirms the new coverage, and where have I saved it?
- What date will the old policy end, and has that insurer confirmed it?
- Do I need updated proof for my lender, lessor or anyone else?
- Are there remaining payments, cancellation fees or a refund to follow up on?
COMMON QUESTIONS
Before you make the move.
For help starting a GEICO quote, call Keith Roberts’s local office at (806) 705-6810.
Do I have to wait until renewal?
Generally, no. You can shop during a policy term. Check your current insurer’s cancellation rules and any fees before deciding when to switch. GEICO’s switching guide explains the timing.
Will requesting a GEICO quote cancel my current insurance?
No. Keep the quote, the new policy purchase and the old policy cancellation as separate steps. Arrange cancellation with your current insurer after replacement coverage is confirmed.
Will I get money back from my old policy?
You may have unused premium to be refunded, but the amount and timing depend on your policy, payments and cancellation terms. Ask the old insurer for a written explanation of the final balance.
What if my car is financed or leased?
Check the lender’s or lessor’s insurance requirements before changing coverage. Ask how it wants updated proof delivered. A policy that meets a state’s minimum requirements may not satisfy a loan or lease. NAIC explains lender considerations.

This guide provides general information. Coverage, eligibility, pricing and cancellation terms depend on the insurer and policy. Confirm your own dates and requirements with the companies involved. A quote or office inquiry does not bind coverage.
