BUYING OR REPLACING A CAR
Auto insurance for your next car.
Whether the car is brand new or new to you, get the insurance details ready before you drive it home. Start a GEICO auto quote or ask our agency for help with your next step.
A purchase checklist for your insurance
- Identify the actual vehicle. Get the year, make, model and vehicle identification number from the seller. A quote based on a general model can change when the exact vehicle details are entered.
- Explain the purchase. Let the insurer know whether you are adding a vehicle or replacing one, and whether you own, finance or lease it.
- Review required coverage. Ask the lender or leasing company for its insurance requirements, including any limits, deductibles and listed-interest details.
- Set the timing. Confirm the intended effective date and time with the insurer before taking possession or driving the vehicle.
- Confirm the result. Review the vehicle, coverage and effective date on the policy documents and obtain the proof of insurance you need.
Buying a car does not finish the insurance process
Do not rely on a seller’s assurance or assume the same automatic-coverage period applies to every policy. Newly acquired vehicle provisions can depend on the existing contract and circumstances. Contact the insurer to confirm what applies to your purchase.
Starting a quote, sending a message or receiving an estimated premium does not activate coverage. If pickup is approaching, call our agency and explain the deadline. A general online request is reviewed during office hours and should not be treated as immediate coverage confirmation.
Choose coverage for how you own and use the car
Financed or leased
Lenders and lessors commonly require collision and comprehensive in addition to applicable liability requirements. Obtain their specific instructions. Do not assume an auto policy includes loan or lease gap protection; review any such product separately with its provider.
Paid for outright
Consider what it would cost to repair or replace the vehicle, along with the limits and deductibles you select. Owning a car without a loan does not remove state financial-responsibility requirements.
New driving plans
Tell the insurer about the primary driver, the address where the car is kept and how it will be used. Discuss delivery, rideshare or business use before assuming a personal auto policy is appropriate.
Keep your comparison consistent
When shopping, compare the same liability limits, vehicle-damage deductibles and optional coverages. Ask about rental reimbursement and roadside assistance if those features matter to you. Check what is included, any separate limits and the policy period rather than comparing only a monthly payment.
If you are changing insurers, coordinate effective dates and confirm replacement coverage before canceling the old policy. Our switching insurance guide explains the questions to consider. Selling a car or transferring its plates may involve separate state requirements.
Our office serves Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma. Use the state links below for the relevant auto page, or call if you are moving between states. We can help you identify the information needed without assuming your previous state’s requirements carry over.
Common questions
Can I shop before choosing a specific car?
Yes, you can begin planning with the vehicles you are considering. For an accurate comparison and final application, confirm the actual vehicle details. An estimate can change after the insurer reviews complete information.
What should I bring to the dealership?
Have your insurance contact information, vehicle details, desired effective date and any lender or lease instructions ready. Confirm what proof the seller needs and obtain coverage confirmation before driving away.
Can I replace a vehicle through this page?
This page starts a new-policy quote or connects you to agency help. It does not process an existing-policy change. Call our office for assistance and confirm any completed change with the insurer.
